Dedicated to the Hindu god Ranganatha, the reclining form of Lord Vishnu on the serpant Aadi Sesha, the ancient temple dating back to 894 AD, is classified as one among the 108 Abhimana Kshethram of Vaishnavate tradition. The temple in Srirangapatna is the uppermost, or the first (aadi ranga) among the three island temples along the river cauvery; followed by 'Shivanasamudra' Madhya Ranga (middle) temple, also in Karnataka; and the Antya Ranga (last) 'Srirangam' temple in Tamil Nadu.

The temple with intricately carved idols and structures is believed to have been initially constructed by the Ganga dynasty chieftains, and was later expanded by the Hoysala and Vijayanagara empires as well.
