Ruins of Lal Mahal Palace, Srirangapatna
Located at Srirangapatna, 15 km from Mysore, Karnataka, Lal Mahal palace was the summer retreat of Tipu Sultan aka the Tiger of Mysore, the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore.
The original palace built in 1791, was demolished by the British between 1807-1809, and now in ruins, used to be a double storey ornate structure with a grand durbar hall, with three rows of magnificent pillars supporting a roof two stories above, flanked by other rooms and large halls, and a library and zenana (Women's Quarters). The lore goes that, Tipu used to chain four tigers near its entrance. The palace had advanced underground drains,concealed earthenware piping, and is believed to have a secret tunnel leading to another of Tipus palace in Sakleshpur. Situated very close to Ranganatha Swamy Temple.
