Interview with Taufiq Qureshi
Trendsetting Percussionist
Taufiq Qureshi, an Indian percussionist cum composer, is recognized for his path-breaking and trend-setting work, as a performing artiste, as well as composer/arranger in the field of world music. Son, and disciple of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha, and brother of maestro Zakir Hussain, Taufiq has pioneered and developed a distinct technique of playing the African percussion instrument, Djembe, in the context of Indian rhythmic compositions. He has successfully incorporated the traditional Tabla repertoire onto this non Indian instrument, which has inspired many percussionists. He has concieved and formed two bands- Surya- the New Sun, an Indian Classical fusion band; and Mumbai Stamp, an innovative band, where trash materials are used to make vibrant patterns of rhythm.
