Akathiyoor is a small village 5 kms from Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district. It is known for its ancient temple Kalasamala chirayil temple. The temple is said to be a holy place of Agasthya muni, one of the great sages of ancient India who wrote many theories and books, and is believed to have spread Vedic religion in the south of India. The sage lived in a cave situated on top of Kallazhi kunnu/ Kallayi hills/ Kalashamala, on the upper precincts of Akathiyoor. Kalashamala comprises of several caves and burial grounds spread over a vast area.
