Sopana Nritham is a novel dance form developed by Kathakali dancer Rajeev Krishna. According to him, the dance is a fusion of natyam (expression), nritham (dance) and nrithyam (enactment) from Kathakali. Unlike Kathakali, Sopana Nritham lacks elaborate dressing style. The term ‘sopanam’ generally means the footsteps that lead to the ‘sreekovil’ of a temple. Rajeev Krishna believes performing this dance form to be the best way to lead oneself towards God.
