Sankaran Embranthiri, born in 1944 in the District of Malappuram, Kerala, is rated as one of the finest exponents of Kathakali music. After his schooling he got trained in Carnatic music under Mr. Govinda Pisharady. He learnt Kathakali music at Kerala Kalamandalam. His performances as a Kathakali musician in different venues of Kerala made him popular and he came to be known as Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri. In 2003, he was awarded the coveted Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram instituted by the Kerala Government.
